Turning Point of the Radio
Background
Whether it was for communication or entertainment, the radio was a brilliant invention that forever changed society. The radio is a
wireless communication device that was originally used to send words, music, codes, and other signals over long distances. The
idea of wireless communication first started with the radio, and was invented by the Italian experimenter Guglielmo
Marconi, who transmitted the first radio waves in December of 1895.Radio was also used for broadcasting, which at one point was
just as popular as the television. Families would gather around their radios at night and listen to broadcasts and music. This time, the
1920’s to the 1950’s, was named the Golden Age of Broadcasting. However, this time shortly came to an end with the rise of the
television. After Marconi discovered how to transmit a signal, experimental broadcasts began in about 1910 by Lee De Forest. He
produced this program from the Metropolitan Opera House starring a famous opera singer, Enrico Caruso(Broad 27).
